ROY SCHWEIGER
Roy Schweiger, a photographer and director based in New York, has an unwavering fascination with the human face. He perceives the unique diversity that exists between each countenance as both inspiring and enigmatic. Over time, Schweiger’s captivation shifted toward the interplay of light and shadow—the transformative qualities that shape and sculpt the face. As an artist, he yearned to express this dynamic.
Initially, Schweiger embarked on his career as a videographer, creating short documentaries that presented people’s personal stories from a cinematic perspective. However, he soon felt unchallenged and unsatisfied within this medium. Something was missing. It became evident that he was drawn to capturing significant moments, forsaking movement in favor of finding the perfect instant—a frozen narrative encapsulated in a single frame.
In 2007, Mr. Schweiger relocated to Milan, where he established a studio. Collaborating with prominent stylists and industry insiders, he solidified his presence in Italy’s fashion capital. His work gained recognition, leading to partnerships with local and international fashion houses such as DSQUARED2, Zuhair Murad, Gianfranco Ferre’, Neil Barrett, Trussardi and others.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2009 when Esquire magazine commissioned Schweiger to shoot a retrospective story on Dolce&Gabbana for their Menswear 20th anniversary. The images were captured in Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s Portofino summer home, just four months after Madonna’s 51st birthday party there. This opportunity marked a high point in his career.
As the recession loomed, Schweiger sensed that the fashion and commercial worlds needed a new direction. It was no longer solely about reinvention; instead, he sought to create novel mediums. Drawing from his background in moving images, he shattered conventional boundaries, merging photography and video into a unified visual product—a testament to his innovative spirit.
The Parallax effect, well-known in the post-production world, allows Schweiger to create moving frames and animate human movements. Each individual photograph becomes an innovative, defined product that speaks a fresh language to the realms of fashion, commercial work, and still life.
One of Schweiger’s notable pieces, “Institutionalised,” is an animated fashion film commissioned by DSQUARED2 for their Fall Winter 14’-15’ womenswear collection. This award-winning film has garnered recognition at the La Jolla Fashion Film Awards (2014), London Fashion Film Awards (2015), and NYC Winter Fashion Film Awards (2015). The juxtaposition of still images infused with movement has become his signature style.
In 2015 Schweiger relocated to New York to persure a new wave of clients and to proceed his Eurpean assignments. Soon after he started working with big fashion houses such Marc Jacob, and Mango and major publications such VMAGAZINE, Elle and L‘Officiel. In 2019 Schweiger’s team had the pleasure to accept an assihnment from Celine Dion. He then captured the “Queen of power ballads” in a series of personal photographs who was invited to to make an appearance at the Met Gala in New York.
